10 Natural Secrets to Flawless Skin

+ Rebecca

It’s Fashion Week here in New York City (September 10–17, 2015), which has us all thinking about how to get that flawless look.

You can watch the models on the catwalk only so long before asking yourself, “How does she get her skin to look that good?”

Fortunately, the secrets aren’t limited to the models, alone. We have the inside scoop on some of the tricks you can apply to your own skin care routine to enjoy flawless skin this week and throughout the fall season.

Our little twist is that we’re focusing on natural ways to achieve the best results, so you won’t find any recommendations for makeup products or techniques. The best skin is the healthiest skin!

  1. Avoid harsh cleansers. They strip your skin of natural oils, leaving you looking dry and dull. Try alternating a non-sulfate cleanser in the morning with a creamy, enzyme-rich cleanser in the evening for the best cleansing results without drying. Choose products from companies that focus on natural ingredients.
  2. Use a replenishing toner. Those alcohol-rich toners of the past dry out skin and leave it parched and thirsty. Use a replenishing toner that has natural moisturizers and hydrators. Our Rescue + Relief Spray works great in a pinch! Other good options include those with rosemary oil and neroli.
  3. Ditch the synthetic fragrances. These are made with a myriad of chemicals that the manufacturers don’t have to identify because of “trade-secret” protections. They often cause allergic reactions-not attractive. Look for fragrance-free products, or solutions with natural-sourced fragrances, such as those that come from essential oils.
  4. Think long and hard about your moisturizer. This is one of the most important products in your skin care arsenal. Get the wrong one, and you could neglect your skin, leaving it without the nutrients it needs. Or, you could get one that has too many heavy oils, and increases breakouts. Look for natural oils, butters, and essential fatty acids. Avoid petrolatum and other synthetic ingredients. Additional antioxidants, triglycerides, extracts, and vitamins can help your skin stay strong against daily assaults. Try our Calming Moisture for true radiance!
  5. Protect: The sun is the number-one cause of aging. Protect your skin from dangerous UV radiation. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the safest options. Avoid chemical sunscreens that may increase skin damage.
  6. Exfoliate with care. Old-style exfoliants caused microtears in the skin, increasing inflammation and acne breakouts. Look for exfoliating products with gentle ingredients, like fruit acids, oatmeal, and honey.
  7. Stay hydrated. You’d be amazed how much a little dehydration can age you! Keep water with you at all times and sip throughout the day.
  8. Mask regularly. Masks are the real secret to beautiful skin. Your best approach is to alternate a purifying mask with a hydrating mask, using each 2-3 times a week. That means you’re masking just about every night, which is what you should be doing! Purifying masks draw out dirt and pollutants from the deep layers of the skin. The good ones include Dead Sea mud, clays, and fruit extracts and essential oils to keep skin from drying out. Hydrating masks include butters, natural oils, triglycerides, amino acids, and other deeply nourishing ingredients like coconut oil and honey. Don’t be afraid to alternate with the good ones until you find a group that works well for your skin.
  9. Eat well. We truly are what we eat. If you’re regularly swallowing fast food, expect your skin to show it with a dull, lackluster appearance. Choose more fresh fruits and veggies to get your skin glowing.
  10. Reduce stress. Stress shows up quickly on the skin. We break out, get red, or just look tired. Work stress relief into your daily routine. Try yoga, tai chi, meditation, regular walks, music therapy, massage, art therapy, or whatever appeals to you. Don’t forget to spend at least some time each day breathing deeply!
