OMG Not Again! When Cancer Returns

+ Pamela Friedman

What would it feel like to learn that your cancer has returned? After successfully experiencing remission, many cancer survivors are forced to face the devastating effects of a new cancer diagnosis. Although people deal with recurring cancer in a variety of ways, finding the support of friends, family, and a doctor you trust can be good first steps toward fighting the battle again.

At first, it may seem impossible to deal with this disease once more. The Mayo Clinic article When Cancer Returns admits that, “You may doubt the wisdom of your past treatment decisions or the lifestyle choices you’ve made since your last cancer experience,” but advises remembering that, “…you didn’t cause your recurrence. Don’t doubt your judgment as you make decisions about your current cancer treatment.”

Cancer survivor and fighter Kim (who has been battling recurrences for 32 years) admits, “When getting a diagnosis multiple times, you just learn to take it one day at a time with God’s help. The journey is so much harder alone.” The National Cancer Institute recommends expressing your concerns, wishes and fears directly to your healthcare provider, or finding a support group or counselor to talk to on a regular basis (like the organization Cancer Back Up).

The fear of cancer recurrence is a constant threat among survivors, including celebrities like singer Kylie Minogue. She recently expressed her anxieties when dealing with any new ailment: “Your body and muscles have a memory of the way it was when you were sick, and there are definitely times when I float back to that place.”

In the end, it seems that facing your fears and hesitations head on can truly help in a new battle against cancer. A fellow fighter from the Inspire message boards says, “Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor questions no matter how insignificant they may seem. Expressing all of your questions and concerns is as important as knowing the answers.” For additional support, please visit the Healing Well website, or research support groups at Cancer and Careers.
